Effective Fly Control in Food Environments: Compliance, Risk, and Modern Best Practice

In food production, packaging, and preparation facilities, maintaining a controlled and hygienic environment is non-negotiable. Flying insects—particularly flies—represent one of the most persistent risks to food safety. Far from being a nuisance, flies are a recognised vector for cross-contamination and the transmission of harmful pathogens.

The Food Safety Risks Posed by Flies

Flies are capable of carrying and transmitting a wide range of microbiological hazards, including Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes. These organisms are commonly transported on the insect’s legs, body hairs, and within its digestive tract after contact with contaminated material.

Once inside a food facility, flies can contaminate:

  • Risk of contamination through fragmentation
    When insects are electrocuted, they can rupture, dispersing biological debris that may settle on food, surfaces, or packaging.

  • Potential pathogen dispersal
    Scientific studies have demonstrated that electrocution can aerosolise bacteria carried by flies, increasing the risk of cross-contamination.

  • Unsuitability for high-risk and open-food areas
    Food safety guidance and auditor expectations strongly discourage—and in many cases prohibit—the use of grid units in high-care or exposed food zones.

  • No monitoring or trending capability
    Grid units destroy insects, preventing species identification, activity trending, and meaningful pest data analysis.

  • Reliance on declining fluorescent lamp technology
    Grid-style EFKs depend on fluorescent UV tubes that are subject to regulatory phase-out under RoHS legislation.


Fluorescent Lamp Regulatory Changes: What This Means in Practice

Under UK and EU RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Regulations, fluorescent lamps containing mercury are only permitted where specific time-limited exemptions apply. These exemptions are being progressively withdrawn.

Current regulatory position:

  • Most general-purpose fluorescent lamps (e.g. T5, T8, compact fluorescent types) lose their RoHS exemption from 1 February 2024. After this date, they cannot be placed on the market (manufactured, imported, or sold).

  • Certain special-purpose lamps, including some UV-emitting fluorescent tubes, currently retain exemptions. These typically expire between 2025 and 2027, depending on lamp classification.

  • RoHS regulates placing products on the market, not the continued use of existing equipment. Facilities may continue using installed fluorescent-based EFKs while lamps remain available, but future supply is increasingly constrained.


Implications for Fly Control Equipment (EFKs)

Declining replacement availability

As exemptions expire and manufacturers exit the market, sourcing compliant fluorescent UV tubes is becoming increasingly difficult. Once remaining stock is exhausted, affected units may no longer be serviceable.

End-of-life risk for fluorescent-only EFKs

EFKs that rely exclusively on fluorescent lamps—particularly grid-style units—face a clear end-of-life scenario driven by lamp obsolescence rather than equipment failure.

LED UV EFKs as the long-term compliant solution

LED-based UV EFKs do not contain mercury, do not rely on RoHS exemptions, and offer stable long-term availability. They represent the lowest regulatory, operational, and audit risk option for facilities requiring continuous fly control.


The Modern Standard: UV LED Glue Board Fly Control

UV LED EFKs fitted with adhesive capture boards represent current best practice for food environments. These systems align with regulatory requirements, hygiene expectations, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles.

  • High-performance UV-A LED technology (typically 365–395 nm) with consistent output and extended service life

  • Energy-efficient and environmentally compliant — no mercury, no hazardous waste

  • Supports monitoring, species identification, and trend analysis

Because insects are captured intact, glue board units provide valuable data to support IPM programmes and meet auditor expectations for evidence-based pest control.


Integrated Pest Management & Audit Expectations

Modern pest management focuses on prevention, documentation, and continuous improvement, not just elimination. Auditors increasingly expect to see:

  • EFK placement aligned with site risk zoning

  • Documented maintenance and inspection schedules

  • Insect capture records with species identification

  • Trend analysis demonstrating proactive control

  • Corrective actions linked to defined pest thresholds

Traditional grid-style EFKs provide little or no support for these requirements. In contrast, LED glue board units are inherently audit-friendly and data-driven.

Grid-type fluorescent EFKs are not illegal to use, but they present contamination concerns, limited monitoring capability, and increasing supply risk due to fluorescent lamp phase-outs. Their continued reliance introduces avoidable operational and audit exposure.

UV LED glue board EFKs provide a compliant, hygienic, and future-proof alternative, supporting both food safety outcomes and audit readiness.
